How the fold mechanism affects long-term reliability
Every additional joint in a fold mechanism is a potential wear point. Across the reviews we tracked, single-hinge designs had noticeably fewer complaints about looseness or squeaking after a year of near-daily folding than multi-joint designs, even when the multi-joint version folded to a smaller stored size.
What to check in the listing photos
Look for a photo or diagram showing the folded profile from the side, not just from above. A walking pad that looks compact from above can still stand taller than expected once folded, which matters if you're sliding it under low furniture.

What to check before buying
Read the fold height in the listing, not just the folded footprint — a walking pad that folds flat but still stands 40cm tall won't slide under most sofas. If storage space is your main constraint, prioritise fold height over any other spec.
A well-built folding hinge, when properly locked, is just as stable during use as a fixed frame. Instability complaints in reviews almost always trace back to the belt tension or an uneven floor, not the fold mechanism itself.
Single-hinge models: under 10 seconds. Multi-joint models: closer to 20–30 seconds. Neither is a meaningful time cost, but it does affect whether you'll actually bother folding it daily.
